The Lessons of Deaf President Now I & II: Partners and Attitudes
Tuesday, June 29 · 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM EDTCost: Free
This event is hosted by Deaf Literacy Center
Do you know how the DPN movement was won? Do you know how hearing and Deaf people worked together as Partners to make the DPN movement a success? Do you know how people put the Deaf Community first, and themselves second, to make it possible for the first Deaf person to be President of Gallaudet University? Dr. Angel Ramos, author of Triumph of the Spirit: The DPN Chronicle, will answer all these questions as he gives a first-hand account of the thrilling story of how Deaf students at Gallaudet University succeeded in their cry heard round the world—“We want a Deaf President NOW!”
Dr. Ramos will also tell the story of the 2006 protest. As you listen to Dr. Ramos’s presentation, you will feel the tribulations and joys of the 1988 and 2006 protests and learn the steps that lead to success.
During the 1988 DPN movement, Dr. Ramos was chairperson of the DPN Fund and a member of the DPN Council. He is a Fulbright Scholar and the 2nd Deaf Latino to receive a doctorate degree and the only one to receive a doctorate degree from Gallaudet University. He has 40+ years in the field of Deaf education, including 18 years as an administrator, Dr. Ramos has presented at over 100 venues in the U.S. and the world including China, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia. Besides telling the story of the DPN movement, Dr. Ramos will share with the audience the importance of being partners. Just like his book, Dr. Ramos’s presentation promises to be enlightening and inspirational.
At the end of the presentation, the audience will have an opportunity to ask Dr. Ramos questions and purchase an autographed copy of his book.
