Virtual Reality

With such amazing technology at our fingertips, people with disabilities can have adventures, experiences, and sports in new and exciting ways. HUG went in search of the best virtual reality (VR) gaming system and hired a VR expert to create the most extensive catalog of games that would be the best for people with limited mobility and other special needs.

HUG purchased an Oculus VR gaming system and 60+ games suitable for most people with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, sensory processing disorders, physical limitations, and people with autism spectrum disorder—all for the simple purpose of giving people with disabilities experiences they likely would not have otherwise.
.
If someone with wheelchair mobility wants to swim with dolphins, we’ve got it with Ocean Rift. If someone with autism wants to pilot a spaceship to anywhere in the universe, they can at HUG with Discovering Space 2. If a person with a disability is new to making friends, HUG offers an extraordinary immersive experience with Henry, a movie from the minds behind Toy Story 3 and Brave about a loveable hedgehog who just needs a hug.
.
Cost is often the main obstacle to VR experiences because consoles and games are expensive and complicated to set up. We are excited to offer our entire research on this project and individual virtual reality experiences for people with special needs at no cost. Our review of games includes a description of the game as well as notes about interaction levels, sitting/standing requirements, comfortability ratings (is this game relaxing or intense?), prices, and suitability for certain special needs.

Keep in mind that while VR is super fun, it comes with associated risks. Virtual reality images flash very quickly. Because the field of view is large, more of the eye is stimulated so that more of the brain may be affected, and this may trigger a photosensitive seizure. Talk to your doctor or primary health care provider before engaging with VR. Before deciding to use HUG’s VR experiences at home or in the HUG office, you must read HUG’s complete liability statement here.
.

Beat Saber is a unique VR rhythm game where your goal is to slash the beats (represented by small cubes) as they are coming at you. Every beat indicates which saber you need to use and also the direction you need to match. All the music is composed to perfectly fit the handmade levels. Our goal is to make players almost dance while cutting the cubes and avoiding obstacles.

Gameplay Notes

This is a fun, popular game that’s a great cardio workout. Intense movement of arms is necessary, but you don’t have to press many buttons. This takes a lot of multi-tasking skill, including figuring out which arm to move, which direction to swipe arm, and what’s coming next. This game is best for more advanced VR players. This isn’t a game. Richie’s Plank Experience is a psychological experience that your visitors and guests will react to with exhilaration, fear or laughter. For the VR veteran, even more entertainment comes from watching the reactions of others.

Other in-game experiences include Hero Academy, where you can fly through the city in Rocket Race; save the city in Missile Defense; and extinguish fires in Fire Fight! The Sky Brush level will slow you down with a zen-like skywriting experience.
