Glow-Up Bowling

Picture this: a neon-lit bowling alley, glowing accessories as far as the eye can see, 200 beaming smiles, and nonstop dancing… that’s what lit up Dunedin Lanes at HUG’s Glow Up Bowling Party, a night that started with bowling and ended with what could only be described as an all-out glow rave.

Hosted by the Friends of HUG Social Group, this electric Saturday night turned what started as a bowling party into a full-blown glow rave, complete with blacklights, LED everything, and the kind of joy that cannot be contained by lane assignments. For the night, HUG rented the entire bowling alley, welcoming more than 200 friends into a space designed fully for inclusive celebration and connection.

From the moment doors opened at 6:00 PM, the glow was undeniable. HUG friends, families, and volunteers rolled in dressed to impress, rocking neon hats, light-up tutus, glowing bracelets, and the iconic white HUG shirts that lit up perfectly under the blacklights. It was less bowling night and more fashion week meets dance party meets glow-fueled chaos, in the best way.

But truthfully, the magic REALLY kicked in when the lights dimmed a little lower and the music cranked up, turning the lanes into a spontaneous dance floor. What started as a few friends grooving in a conga line, weaving through the lanes, quickly became a full-on glow dance party, complete with glow sticks waving in the air, and enough energy to rival a festival rave.

In true HUG fashion, the night was not just about fun. It was about belonging.

Midway through the event, the music paused for a moment that reminded everyone why HUG exists. Over a dozen new friends, attending their very first HUG event, were welcomed to the mic. Each name was met with cheers, applause, and hugs from all directions, making it crystal clear that once you walk into a HUG event, you are no longer a stranger.

As always, the HUG team came prepared with gifted HUG t-shirts for new friends and a plan to connect them with others who share common interests, because community does not happen by accident here.

One new friend, whose family drove all the way from Central Florida for his very first HUG event, summed it up perfectly:

“Everyone has been so welcoming tonight. I feel like I can truly be myself here.”

And yes, there was food, because glow dancing works up an appetite.

HUG served a delicious pizza dinner, with pizzas baked fresh throughout the evening so no one ever missed out. Thanks to the incredible team at The Kitchen Dunedin, hot pizza kept coming from start to finish, making it easy to refuel between frames, dance breaks, and photo ops.

Some friends bowled nonstop. Others rarely left the dance floor. Every corner of Dunedin Lanes buzzed with connection, laughter, and that feeling you get when you are exactly where you belong.

By the end of the night, the scoreboard did not matter at all.

What mattered was the glow everyone carried out the door. The kind that comes from laughing freely, dancing without judgment, and being surrounded by people who celebrate you exactly as you are.

HUG team member Melinda Reed captured it best:

“I’ve never seen a bowling alley light up like this. Sharing the night with more than 200 HUG friends was incredible.”

When the lights finally came back on, no one was ready to leave. Goodbyes were filled with hugs, laughter, and excited chatter about the next HUG event, because once you experience a night like this, you start counting down immediately.

The Friends of HUG Social Group exists to create spaces where adults with disabilities can thrive socially, creatively, and unapologetically. Glow Up Bowling was not just another night out. It was a radiant reminder that joy multiplies when everyone is included, and that when HUG friends come together, the glow has no limits.
